Zirconium Teeth

What is Zirconium?

Zirconium is a metal in group d of the periodic table, which appears white under normal conditions. Zircon (ZrSiO4) is the main mineral from which zirconium is obtained; USA, Australia, Russia, Brazil, India are the countries with these mineral deposits. Zirconium has been used in the medical sector for about 60 years. Zirconium, which is primarily used in hip prostheses in the orthopedics branch, has started to be used in the dental sector over time.

What is Zirconium Tooth?

Zirconium, which is an aesthetic, robust, biologically compatible and reliable material, is used in dentistry as a coating material (crown, bridge), implant, post or pivo. Zirconium is used as a dental coating material with two methods. The first of these is layered technique and the other is monolithic zirconium applications.

What is Layering Technique? What is Monolithic Zirconium?

When zirconium is used as a substructure material and a porcelain layer is applied on it, this method is called layering technique or layered technique. The method consisting only of zirconium and without a porcelain layer is called monolithic zirconium. In monolithic zirconium, the tooth consists entirely of zirconium elements.
What are the Differences and Advantages of Zirconium Teeth Compared to Classic Metal-Substructured Veneers?
  • Light transmittance is the main factor that determines the aesthetic perception in teeth. The higher the light transmittance, the more aesthetic the crown will be. In teeth with classical metal substructure, the substructure material is silver in color. The substructure is covered with various opaque materials to hide the silver color and connect the porcelain to the metal substructure. For this reason, the aesthetic appearance is weaker. In zirconium teeth, on the other hand, there is no opaque coating, and since zirconium itself is a white and translucent material, its light transmittance is high.
  • Another advantage of zirconium teeth is that they are more biologically compatible and anti-allergic. Zirconium teeth are recommended for people with allergic constitution.
  • In porcelains with classical metal substructure, black color formation can be observed in the gingival area over time or silver reflection caused by metal can be observed. In zirconium teeth, blackening of the gingiva does not occur and silver reflection does not occur in the gingival area.
  • Zirconium substructures are lighter than conventional metal substructures.

How is Zirconium Compatible with Gums?

Zirconium teeth are compatible with the gums for reasons such as being antiallergic, being thin at the gingival level, not having the disadvantage of metal color reflection, and not causing bruising in the gums. In addition, in a case such as gingival recession that may occur later, zirconium teeth do not create an aesthetically negative appearance.

Can Zirconium Teeth Be Applied in Allergic People?

Metal-supported crowns are not recommended for allergic individuals. Since zirconium teeth do not contain elements such as chromium, cobalt, beryllium, nickel, they are biologically compatible and are almost impossible to cause allergies.

How Are Zirconium Teeth Applied?

  • If the person who will have zirconium application has not had a preparation, that is, tooth cutting, in his teeth before, the teeth must be cut. It is necessary to cut between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm from the teeth on average.
  • For people who want to replace their existing veneers with zirconium veneers, the old veneers are first removed. The existing preparation is reviewed, if there is a need, the cuts are corrected, if the existing cut is sufficient, the teeth are cleaned and the impression stage is started.
  • After tooth cutting (preparation), impressions are taken from the teeth. The impression can be taken with classical methods or digitally. The process is completed with rehearsal in the next sessions and the teeth are attached.

Is There Pain During Zirconium Teeth?

When zirconium veneers are made, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia during the preparation (cutting) session. Since the procedure is performed under anesthesia, no pain is felt. Temporary teeth are worn until the treatment is finished. Sensitivity control, hot and cold permeability are prevented with temporary teeth. In general, the process is completed without any problems.

How Are Tooth Colors and Tooth Forms Selected When Making Zirconium Teeth?

When zirconium teeth are made, if there will be a total change in color selection, the patient and the physician are free to choose the desired color. If a tooth is made in a certain area, the color selection must be made in harmony with the color of the natural teeth, otherwise an aesthetic appearance cannot be achieved. The forms of the teeth can be selected from sample cases and photographs in the first session, and if our patient has the desired form, new teeth can be prepared under the guidance of samples. The zirconiums prepared in the rehearsal sessions are tested, and if the whole process is going in line with the wishes of the patient and the physician, the finishing phase is started. The patient is free to change his/her mind, form, color and structure during the rehearsal phase. All changes with medical suitability can be made before the finishing session.

People who do not want to undergo orthodontic treatment, who want the crowding to be solved as soon as possible, who do not want to have an implant in tooth loss or who cannot achieve the appearance they dream of with whitening treatment can have zirconium veneers.
